[Morocco 2022]

I started Off-Road quite recently, in July 2021, post-pandemic (if there is such a thing). And as always with me, I started extremely, I did my “initiation” Off-Road immediately with a trip to Iceland. You can check my Youtube videos

Since then I accumulated a lot of kilometres off-road, bought a second bike (KTM 690 Enduro R), and got more experience. But also more hungry for adventure.

So when the hunger for adventure is so big, and you already check ✅ one of the motorbike must-do destinations, what’s next? Considering some family constraints, available holidays, work ….. that allow us more or less two weeks. Now that we have the length of the trip, the destination was quite rapid to be decided.

It will be in Morocco.

Why Morocco? We all have in mind the Paris-Dakar rally, this should be one of our once-in-a-lifetime objectives. Considering the time needed to do such a trip, and the present political situation, we needed to reduce and choose the playground. And Morocco will give us an amazing and versatile landscape and more likely enrich the human experience. Morocco is huge and still has wild landscapes, rocky mountains and dunes.

However the country’s modernization is fast, and the road network is getting bigger and bigger. So there is no time to lose, this might be one of those adventures when talking about it in future can finish by being: “back in the time, it was only you and nature”.

What’s the plan?

Simply, there is no plan, it’s an adventure right 😂.

While the trip to Islande (the first big one) was done over 6 months, with precise roads/tracks we wanted to take and places to see, we finished by doing something else. AND IT WAS PERFECT. We improvised and adapted according to our mood and the conditions (weather and snow)

For Morocco, the decision about the trip was made at the end of 2021, with dates more or less settled (October/November). That was it, that was the entire plan…… until September 2021. That’s when we started thinking, we should start “organizing”.

Dates: 28th Oct/ 14th Nov. – done, scheduled, work agenda free;

How: Not many possibilities are available, so we are choosing the “fastest” one; take the ferry at Gilbartar. To do so, we will put the bike on a car trailer and drive from Paris to Malaga (1800km) as fast as possible. We will leave the car and the trailer there and take bikes to Gilbartar where we will take the ferry to Ceuta.

Morocco, plan: as mentioned, the approach is different: IMPROVISATION….. or not completely. Rather than planning everything and working on the tracks and paths, we would like to take, the approach is, in which direction we should go. We will organise our daily tracks based on the “must-see” POI we figured out worth seeing. However, we will be relying on all tracks I was able to collect to help us identify the area where offroad adventures go, but also be able to use them when necessary.

POI:

  • Chefchaouen
  • Parc national de Talassemtane
  • Barrage El Wahda
  • Moulay Idriss Zerhoun
  • Barrage Idriss 1 er
  • Fès

And the bike?

For this trip, I’ll be using my Ducati DesertX. Reason for that is in first place emotional, I simply love that motorbike. Secondly as we are going to do a lot of km, I just feel more comfortable on it than on the KTM 690 Enduro R (even though it could be better option). This is the purpose of this bike for me, adventure riding, be able to go far and be able to manage aggressive offroad stuff with confidence. And lastly, I just wan to see this bike in this environment and follow the path of her predecessor and inspiration for design, Cagiva.
